A pun taken at its word

In English a fan is a supporter, and a fan is also the thing that pushes air around a room. This motif takes the second reading seriously. Beneath FANS ONLY, set in white letters pulled far apart, lie eight almost photographic objects: two opened hand fans, a desk fan, the outdoor unit of an air conditioner, a twin blower, a small box fan, a ceiling fan and a flat wall-mounted air conditioning unit. They lie across four rows, loose on the cloth, with no frame and no panel behind them, each with a soft shadow. The two hand fans take the outer edges and supply the only strong colour in the group.

Who gets it straight away

Anyone who knows the name of a certain subscription site works out the joke immediately; everyone else simply sees a collection of cooling appliances. Either way it starts a conversation in the office, at a party or over a barbecue in high summer.

Lettering pulled apart

FANS ONLY is set in a narrow grotesque whose letters are spaced wide, and it takes up exactly the width of the group of appliances below. Because that lettering prints white, a dark or strong ground is the condition for it to read.

Grounds and sizes

Royal blue and black run the full way to 5XL, and so do navy and red. Sorbet is the exception and gives out at 3XL.
