The bird looks straight ahead: white head, orange beak and a broad pair of black sunglasses catching the light. An orange blot bursts behind it. Above and below the gull, in angular capitals, stand MOIN IHR and SPACKEN!, orange as well. The letters are narrow, leaning left and bevelled at their ends, with a few breaks running across the words. The gull's head rests on a white field that covers the blot, and two bright streaks sit on the glasses.

How the coast says hello

Moin works at any hour of the day in the north, and Spacken sounds rough yet is rarely meant badly between mates. A shirt for Hamburg and Kiel, and for everyone who knows gulls from the fish-roll stand. It travels home as a souvenir from the North Sea or the Baltic too.

Two printing colours, no more

Orange, white and black carry the whole motif. On black and navy the orange burns hardest; on white and natural it settles down, and there the white gull's head takes its outline from the black lines alone.

Picking a colour and a size

White, navy and black travel the ladder as far as 5XL, natural and burgundy only to 3XL, both groups beginning at S. Its 185 g per square metre, held over all those widths, let the shirt cope with a normal day, a warm one by the water, and service as a base layer when the wind gets up.
