Away-day shirt lettered in broken type

The word ultras is written small but set large, in a blackletter face with sharp bows. A thin rule travels the full width beneath it, broken in the middle to make room for ON TOUR. On the black and the red garment, as the photographs show, the print is grey.

Blackletter without capitals

The lower case is what catches the eye. Broken faces are normally set in capitals; here the word is written small the whole way through. The sharp bows remain, the weight of capitals does not, and the result reads more like a signature than an announcement.

For days spent on the motorway

Special train, nine-seater or supporters' coach: anybody following a club across the country has the right heading on their chest. Grey rather than white holds the motif back far enough to wear away from a match day too.

Shades and widths

On offer are white, navy, red, black, burgundy and brown. The first four of those travel the full ladder of eight widths; burgundy and brown break off after six.

How it is put together

Cotton jersey, circular-knitted with no seam down either flank, feels neither thin nor heavy at 185 g/m², which a 30 °C machine wash does nothing to alter. A band of rib knit encloses the round neck opening.
