No need to look at your watch: inside a green-edged panel stand the segment characters B, I, a colon, E and R, set the way an old clock radio used to set them. Above the panel, ZEIT FÜR EIN runs in white capitals. The green lifts off every one of the five fabric colours, most strongly off navy and black.

Monday morning or Saturday night, this display always shows the same hour. It is a shirt for beer drinkers, for the regulars' table, and for everybody who likes to point at the clock before opening the next bottle. As a birthday or Father's Day present the point lands at once.

What the words mean

Zeit für ein Bier is German for time for a beer, and the trick is that the drink itself has been rebuilt out of clock segments, so the hour and the bottle turn out to be the same thing.

Material and choice

Frechstoff builds the garment from cotton alone; ring-spun yarn leaves the surface even and the jersey answers to the grip as a middleweight at 185 g/m², circular in the knitting and so without any seam at the flanks, a state that 30 degrees in the machine keeps it in. Straight cut, short sleeves, round neck with rib banding. Red, navy and black carry the ladder to 5XL, while brown and burgundy halt at 3XL.
