Figures of the sort stitched onto a shirt back or a campus jacket: the number stands tall and upright along the leg, filled in red and ringed in white. It travels nearly the full length of the garment, so missing it takes some doing.

Picking a colour

Red against black, with that white outline, comes out especially strong; against grey it reads more sporting. Burgundy is the third option, and sizing spans S to 2XL.

Where they earn their keep

At a barbecue, after indoor training, or watching a match on a screen in the yard. At 330 gsm the garment sits closer to a cropped jogger than to a thin running short, comfortable enough for a whole afternoon in a deckchair. The fleece is raised on the inside, which gives the soft handle; wash at 30 °C.

Pockets and waist

One slip pocket each side, another behind for a wallet. The ribbed waist draws tighter on a cord, so nothing slides without a belt.

Reading the weight

For comparison, t-shirt jersey usually sits around 185 gsm. These weigh nearly twice as much per square metre, which makes them hang heavier and hold their shape across a long day. Ring-spun cotton supplies 70 per cent of the mix and polyester the other 30.
