The red tag borrowed from aviation
On aircraft, red streamers bearing this wording mark safety pins and covers that have to come off before take-off. MIL-TEC carries the signal across to a bunch of keys: a strongly red strap, lettered in white capitals, REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT.
The wording is stitched into both faces. At the upper end a metal eyelet leads to the key ring, where house, car or locker keys find their place.
Why red
In aviation the colour is deliberate: against a grey airframe a red streamer has to catch the eye at once, so that nobody overlooks a pin. The same property earns the fob its keep on a keyring. Inside a dark jacket pocket, or on a desk under papers, it is the most conspicuous thing present.
Size and make-up
Over a length of 12.5 cm it runs 2.5 cm across. Woven into it are 60% polyester and 40% cotton, and the edges finish turned under. The metal eyelet spreads the pull across the weave instead of gathering it at one point.
More than keys
The ring goes just as readily onto a bag zip, a belt loop or a piece of luggage. Anyone wanting to tell several bunches apart can pair the red tag with a strap in another colour.
